Ride Tips

Selected to minimize traffic engagement and maximize sight lines for safety, this route travels public roads of state, county, and township oversight, and experiences periodic commuter, commercial, and agricultural traffic. In general, but not always: our state roads are smoothly paved and lined two-lane roads with shoulders suitable for bicycles; county roads are lined and two lanes, may not have shoulders, may be smooth paved or chip-sealed; county roads are typically narrower, unlined, chip-sealed roads without shoulders. Bicyclists must be prepared and proficient to ride public roads. Note that cornfields can block lines of sight around bends and intersections.

This route in Union County’s extreme north is almost entirely rural, offering scenes of farming activities and crops from planting to harvest. The area is also site of solar farms, enabling local farmers to make productive their less fertile acreage.

Eat & Drink

You’ll notice the environment gets quieter as you head north. Dalton Union Winery & Brewery is known for its many popular selections and entertainment activities. It’s also an AirBnB and HarvestHost site. Rhetoric Brewing offers a relaxing and quiet family farm setting amid vast farmlands. Intimate Bokes Creek Winery quietly boasts its own large vineyard. Ravenhurst Champagne Cellars, with its own vineyard, is one of those well-kept secrets, artfully crafting storied, international award-winning champagnes. With two casual dining options, the village of Broadway is its own oasis nestled amongst the vastness of the surrounding area.

Restrooms

Each of the wineries and breweries has facilities. On the road, restrooms can be found at Mosier’s Market and Wood Longbrake Memorial Park in Raymond.

Terrain

There are no gravel roads on this route however newly chipped and sealed roads may have loose small gravel. Most of the parks and wineries will have gravel lanes and parking.

Cautions

The following segments are short but deserve added attention.

  • Raymond Road around the villages of Raymond and Broadway see periodic commuter and commercial traffic.
  • At Bokes Creek Winery, use only the upper entrance (nearest Harmon Patrick Rd) and use caution crossing oft-busy RT31.
  • Rural roads may have seasonal agricultural vehicles and visibility at intersections and around curves obscured by cornfields.
  • Railroad crossings are diagonal to road. It’s rare but not unheard of to get train-locked near the village of Peoria with its numerous crossings.
